What is a neighborhood missionary?
Nehemiah went to a city that was broken and living in shame. He went with a heart of passion and a determination to follow God’s lead. When he got there he ended up not just rebuilding a wall, but helping lead change and transformation with the people. God used Nehemiah to rebuild Jerusalem.
PDX is a city that could use some rebuilding and it starts with the Church – the body of Christ – being the light and leading the way. If we follow God’s lead and, like Nehemiah, passionately pursue God’s good work in this place we can see a transformed and redeemed city too.
What is a neighborhood missionary?
A neighborhood missionary is someone who engages in a neighborhood with the intention of building up the body of Christ – finding ways to motivate one another to love and good deeds. They have attended a Reach PDX training and have agreed to on going support and accountability.
Does a neighborhood missionary have to live in that neighborhood?
It would be ideal. But, not absolutely necessary. We can reach neighborhoods we don’t live in, but it will take some intentionality to go out of your way to spend time in that neighborhood to get to know it. Eat there, shop there, hang out there.
What does a neighborhood missionary do?
There are three main objectives of a Reach PDX Missionary:
Community Building
Bringing churches and people together
Listening to the positives and negatives in the community
Compassionate Ministry
Working/Partnering with people already doing the work
Acts of kindness (example: picking up trash)
Filling in the gap to meet needs and cultivate a safer/healthier community
Discipleship
Opportunity to learn about God
Challenge/encourage people to surrender to God
Live every day for Jesus
In addition to these things neighborhood missionaries will be doing all kinds of things – it depends on the neighborhood. But, some examples could be:
Get involved in the neighborhood association
Organize a block party
Get to know your neighbors
Get pastors together
Start a small group
Every neighborhood missionary will be coached and supported by Central – not with salary, it’s volunteer – but with resources, more volunteers, administrative things, and whatever else one might need to do the good work!
